The NBA All Star Weekend may be one of the most exciting events of the year, but its most memorable moments aren’t always made on court. From the Dunk Contest to the Historic All Star Game itself, many NBA fans and sneakerheads alike are in awe of the sneakers worn just as much as some of the jaw dropping plays being made. Although the events may fade in the moment, the sneakers worn throughout the weekend are cemented in history.
To celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the NBA and the 71st Anniversary of the NBA All Star Weekend, we present to you the greatest NBA All Star Sneakers.
NIKE KD 4 ‘GALAXY’
Making his second-straight start in a NBA All Star Game, Kevin Durant was at the top of his game leading the Oklahoma City Thunder to the top of the Western Conference. For the 2012 All Star Game, KD rocked this pair of NASA inspired KD 4’s which featured a constellation upper and galaxy print throughout the lining of the sneaker. The sneaker itself showcased KD’s play-style perfectly, by being out of this world.
NIKE LEBRON 9 ‘BIG BANG’
Amidst his 2012 MVP season, LeBron debuted one of his most iconic pairs of sneakers to date, the LeBron 9 ‘Big Bang’. Tributing the Kennedy Space Center in Orlando, much like the KD 4 ‘Galaxy’, the LeBron 9 featured an outer space theme. The blazing orange upper which is inspired by the take off of a space shuttle depicts LeBron’s explosive dunks and fiery leadership on court.
CONVERSE PRO LEATHER
Winning the first ever NBA All Star Dunk Contest in History, Larry Nance Sr. took to the court in a pair of the highly popular Converse Pro Leather sneakers. Using a two-ball windmill dunk to secure the win over NBA Legends Julius Erving and Dominique Wilkins, Nance took home the inaugural trophy hosted in the Mile-High City.
NIKE FOAMPOSITE KRYPTONATE PE
One of the most iconic sneakers in NBA All Star History, the Nike Foamposite Kryptonate PE was debuted by Nate Robinson in the 2009 Dunk Contest. On his journey to dethrone the self proclaimed “Superman” Dwight Howard, Nate Robinson rose to the occasion in Phoenix and became the new champion.
AND1 TAI CHI
One of the most iconic NBA Dunk Contests in history, the 2000 event was overtaken by the Toronto star, Vince Carter. Throughout his sneaker journey, Carter was jumping from brand to brand. But to everyone's surprise, he passed on sneaker giants Adidas and Nike to sign for the younger brand AND1. Opening the event with a 360-Windmill dunk, Carter let everyone know he was on the hunt for the crown. With help from Tracy McGrady, Vinsanity took over and created the iconic “It’s Over” catchphrase.
AIR JORDAN 1 BRED 'BANNED'
Unfortunately, the greatest Air Jordan 1 colorway to ever release was never worn on court in a regulation game. But, in the 1985 NBA Dunk Contest, a rookie Michael Jordan dawned the pair of the Banned sneakers. Although Jordan wasn’t able to take home the win, his free-throw line dunk paired with his gold jewelry is cemented as one of the most iconic images in NBA history.
AIR JORDAN 3 'TRUE BLUE'
Throughout his 2002-2003 sneaker free agency, Kobe was tearing up the court with different Air Jordan silhouettes. Donning a pair of the Air Jordan 3 “True Blue”, Kobe matched up against Jordan himself in his last ever All Star game. Although this game may not have had the greatest highlights, the sound bites captured between the two legends have become historic.
ADIDAS T MAC 3
Pushing for his second NBA scoring title, Tracy McGrady paused his reign of terror on the league during All Star Weekend. Rocking a pair of Adidas T Mac 3’s, McGrady dueled the Shaquille O’Neal led Western conference. Although his performance may have been lackluster, the dual-colored sneakers quickly became a fan favorite.
REEBOK KAMIKAZE 2
The star studded 1995 All Star game was full of excitement for basketball fans and sneakerheads. The presence of Shaq, Barkley and Pippen who were all at the top of their game made for a historic night. Although there were many legends on court, Shawn Kemp stole the show in his Reebok Kamikaze 2 Lows slamming down two dunks on Eastern conference defenders.
NIKE KYRIE 1 'ALL STAR'
The newest recipient of a signature Nike sneaker in 2015, Kyrie Irving arguably had the best sneakers on court during All Star weekend. Defending his NBA All Star MVP title, Kyrie took it slow during the game but had a busy weekend participating in the 3 Point Contest. Many fans were happy to see Kyrie with his own sneaker, especially after the legendary NBA All Star performance showcased the year before.
